On December 5 and 6, 2019, WasteBuild took place as the first-ever international conference on circular built environment, hosted at RAI Amsterdam Convention Center. With the aim of accelerating the transition towards a circular built environment, WasteBuild brought together innovators and inspirational building experts from all over the world, among which SOUR’s Managing Partner Pinar Guvenc joined the panel on “What is holding us back and how can we overcome?”.
Centered around themes such as the circular economy, material recycling, sustainable use of products, local sourcing, green initiatives in engineering and architecture, and decreasing construction industry’s carbon footprint, several panel discussions, lectures, and showcases took place at the two-day event.
“What is holding us back and how can we overcome?” took place on Friday, December 6 and was moderated by David Greenfield, founder of the sustainable consultancy SOENECS. In addition to Pinar, other panelists were Peter van Assche (Founding Principal, Bureau SLA), Saskia Oranje and Karin Dorepaal (Partners, DOOR architecten) and Reinder Bakker (Founder, Overtreders W).
By presenting sustainable case studies and examples of circular built projects, the panel underlined the importance of educating stakeholders to onboard them in to a circular mindset. Pinar emphasized the importance of strategic collaborations between diverse disciplines, in order to not only create circular projects, but also to create a sustainably circular business approach in projects of all scope and scale.
